Comment by Robin Dalton. Submitted at 12:35 on Tuesday 4-Nov-2008. SUBJECT: Halloween Thank you all for the positive comments and feedback about Halloween. I think this year again proved a success, and a big thank you must go out to all the volunteers who helped on the night. Its about this time every year that myself and Dave think 'Never Again' as we reflect on the evening. We have no idea how many will turn up and car parking always gives us our greatest concern. This year around 1800 people came along, which is on par with the biggest turn out we've had. Unfortunately, this number of people again meant that parking was a headache, and there were still several hundred people outside the Estate at 7:00pm. For this reason the start was delayed, but understandably early arrivals started to get cold on the Promenade. Its not always easy to get the balance right! Well, as to whether we will do it again next year, watch this space....the event seems to have gathered a life of its own. |

Comment by DANNIE. Submitted at 09:58 on Sunday 2-Nov-2008. SUBJECT: IF YOU GO DOWN TO THE WOODS TONIGHT Firstly, let me say well done to all staff and volunteers for a cracking exhibition the other night. So lets get started. Yes there were a few hiccups, but lets think about this for a moment. 1st the number of visitors per staff must have taken some very good crowd management, and if you think things where a bit slow, just take this into consideration. Just supposing someone had strayed off the beaten track, they would have found themselves in a very tricky situation indeed (no pun meant). The staff were only making sure we were safe. So thank you all for that. Also thank you to all the people that turned out in fancy dress, If Ogden had been invaded that night by someone or thing from outer space, they would have had it away on their heels as fast has their little craft would carry them. The only thing that didn't go right was my grandson fell asleep half way round, the excitement was too much for him! He is still telling everyone about the fireworks, and lights etc at Ogden. So once again, thankyou each and everyone of you, staff and visitors alike, you made a good night great. Ta. Dannie(old git+vat) |

Comment by Rachel Walmsley. Submitted at 22:26 on Monday 13-Oct-2008. SUBJECT: Memorial Seats I have been keeping abreast of the recent debates about the use of Ogden Water as a cemetery, and I must admit that I agree to some extent about the views expressed. However, I would just like to tell you all about the very special lady who is depicted in the plaque in front of the visitor centre as 'the girl from the top of the hill'. That lady was my mother, Jean Wainwright, she was born at Far Burrs (the Top of The Hill) on 22nd August 1950, the daughter of Eric and Enid Wainwright. My mother dedicated her life to the local community - she married at St John's Church Bradshaw, qualified as a nursery nurse, then went on to work with severely disabled youngsters, many of whom died as a result of their conditions. When she died in February, we searched for a fitting tribute to a wonderful and caring lady and decided that she could still do good as an ambassador for Ogden. So, please do not see the bench outside the visitor centre as a 'mausoleum', but see it as a trubute to the best that Ogden can provide - a wonderful community spirit which lives on in her friends and daughters. Please read the poem and live by it - enjoy Ogden as I, my father, my sister, and my nephews have done, and pass this on to your own generation. Places like Ogden need funds and support to survive, and I hope that my mothers tale will inspire you all to protect such an environmental gem. With best wishes Rachel |

Comment by Anthony G. Submitted at 10:47 on Thursday 9-Oct-2008. SUBJECT: photos We have lots of photos of Ogden on the website photogallery. Any additional ones would have to be pretty special to add to the site, as Ogden has to pay for the website space. From time to time, we do ask for photos, particularly very old ones, and occasionally for a calendar or competition. We would be pleased to add a link from the site to other Ogden galleries on the web. Just advise me of the link. My email link is on the Home page. |

Comment by Dannie(old git vat). Submitted at 12:50 on Wednesday 1-Oct-2008. SUBJECT: OGDEN WATER,A LIFES CIRCLE when you visit Ogden water, don't just see water and trees. when i travel round on my doozer truck(mobility scooter) i see, young moms pushing there children round, then off to feed the ducks. toddlers climbing over tree stumps, and collecting pine cones(witch mom and dad promptly put back). i see young couples walking hand in hand, groups of school children, with there teachers having fun whilst learning about nature. teenagers larking about, having fun the only way teenagers can. i see joggers pounding round the waterside(only one more lap) .there the hikers with there back packs, walking sticks, maps and sturdy walking boots, disappearing into the many different walks. i see grandadds, and grandma,s, getting dragged to the ducks or the many sculptures(look at this grandma)then there's grandad, and grandma taking a steady stroll, letting the young uns rush by, and taking the view in there own special time. then there's me on my doozer truck, thinking of all the times Ive been in this area as a child, or taking my grandchildren to the smiley face(only Jake knows about that)or just sitting there remembering my days in the army, and thinking how lucky i am. so Ogden isn't just a body of water and a few trees, its a place where families, meet and play. not forgetting oggy the monster(take a look at the video)they say its gone, but me and my grandson know its still there hiding till we have all gone home. so visit Ogden water, have a hot or cold drink and a sandwich. visit the craft centre. yes Ogden isn't just a reservoir its a way of life. so thank you all the staff, and a personal thanks to all you people that make my trips round Ogden a pleasure, Dannie(old git+vat) |

SUBJECT: if not relevant please delete, just thought id let getting faster, this only happens in the movies or so i thought.tother month i was going into town on my doozer truck, when i started to pick up speed.not a problem i thought, the mob scooter has a built in safety device to stop it going faster than the governed speed.WRONG,now I'm traveling at a great rate of knots down a hill that's boarded with a duel carriageway, and at the bottom a main road junction.so holding on for dear life,my nostrils flaring like a mad race horse on speed tooting mi hoot and screaming like a well whipped baby.hit the emergency breaks.only left hand front wheel locked,(i think i'm going to die now).but managed to stop before i was either mashed by an artic or the fence at the junction made chips outta me.so the next time your gong down the road and see some mad man traveling at the speed of light, waving and a howling like a scalded dog, dont laugh, say a little prayer, someone did for me that day.the journey into town seem rather bland now the thingy that makes it stop is working, but call me old id rather have it that way |

It is cheap and very good, leaving the only thing to worry about being tyres wearing out! The path around the reservoir is 1.25 miles Danny goes around twice a week = 2.50 miles 52 weeks in a year = 130 miles Over four years = 520 miles Plus getting to Ogden |

Comment by Ranger Smith. Submitted at 10:58 on Saturday 13-Sep-2008. SUBJECT: Memorial benches Whilst I agree that memorial benches etc are a nice way to remember a loved one, there comes a time when there is simply no room for any more in certain areas, so how about donating say, native spring flowering bulbs which will look good for many years to come, enhance the site furthur and give a welcome display of colour during the winter months for visitors. They could be planted by volunteer groups, local schools etc, thus giving even more people the chance to enjoy Ogden and, for the teachers, link in with one of the key stages in education. |
|
Comment by David Wilson. Submitted at 15:48 on Wednesday 6-Aug-2008. SUBJECT: Memorial seats O how I wish it was that simple". Thankfully the reorganisation of memorials throughout Calderdale is now handled centrally. This means that if we require a seat, we notify that office and when the next person enquires, they make the arrangements and bill them. This is great news for the staff at Ogden, as we are daily inundated by requests for seats, tables, trees, sculptures and all sorts of other memorials. We have also had people sneaking in under the cover of night to install plaques of their own on seats, carvings, walls and trees. We thank those who have provided us with memorial seating etc, as it has provided a very real service, and welcome rest spots. Saving the estate budget and the council taxpayer quite a sum may I may add. Believe it or not there is still a seat yet to be installed on the car parks and a plaque to be placed on the second of the two round tables outside the visitor centre. BUT WE ARE FULL! And there is no space for anymore for the foreseeable future. |
|
Comment by John Smith. Submitted at 19:27 on Monday 4-Aug-2008. SUBJECT: Memorial seats, benches and trees I am so glad that the organising of the placing of memorial seats, benches and trees at Ogden is now with another department within the council, maybe we might have better control and stop the place becoming like a cemetery. I noticed on one of my many visit that we had two new benches and tables outside the visitor centre but the day after one of the tables had a memorial fixed to in. I do not want to have my cup of tea in a church yard do you? I have no objection to people donating benches and trees but do we rally need to have memorials attached to them, why cant people be happy just in the knowledge that they have donated a bench or a tree where they can spend a little time remembering a loved one. As I have commented before Ogden is a wonderful place and I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the staff and volunteers for all the hard work that they all do in trying to keep the place the way it is |
|
Comment by David Wilson. Submitted at 10:16 on Monday 7-Jul-2008. SUBJECT: Memorial Trees Unfortunately we no longer organise the memorial seats, benches and trees at Ogden. Another department within the council now handles these centrally, though the installation is still done by the staff here at Ogden Water. If you would like contact me at the Ogden Water office 01422 249136. I will direct you to the person who can help with the arrangements. |

Comment by Kristina. Submitted at 20:48 on Saturday 5-Jul-2008. SUBJECT: A Remembrance Tree My boyfriend recently passed away aged 21 years. He loved Ogden Water from been a child as he only lived down the road at Thornton. His family, friends and myself would really like some where to visit in his remeberance. We were wondering whether we would be able to plant a tree or have one planted in his remembrance. If so, how would we go about this? Who would be the best person to speak to? I look forward to anybody's comments. Many thanks Kristina |

Unfortunately our seasonal vacancy has just been filled. This leaves the possibilty of volunteering, but of course a non-paying position may not be suitable for you for financial reasons. However, if you are interested in volunteering over the summer, please feel free to get in contact with either myself or David Wilson at Ogden Water, on (01422) 249136. This summer is going to be busy, with some interesting projects/events running alongside seasonal maintenance. Regards, Robin. |

SUBJECT: Metal Detecting at Ogden Water Hi Andrew, On this subject I think it's best to give me or Dave a ring at Ogden Water on (01422) 249136. Comment by Robin Dalton. Submitted at 09:25 on Thursday 8-May-2008. SUBJECT: Biking around Ogden Dear Joshua, Thank you for the question. Unfortunately no biking is allowed around the Ogden Water estate. Although designated access land, under the terms of the agreement, access is limited to walkers only. The staff on the site adhere to this strictly - there just isn't room at Ogden for cycling as well (imagine what it would be like on a warm sunny day!). However, from the Ogden car park are a number of accessible bridleways that can be cycled. One, for example, is across the reservoir dam and up the track opposite (alongside the woodlands)to the Withens. Staff at Ogden will be happy to help if you require further information. I also think I'll have a chat with the web maestro, Anthony, to see if we could somehow put the local cycling routes on this website! I hope this helps. |

Comment by Robin Dalton. Submitted at 09:46 on Tuesday 1-Apr-2008. SUBJECT: Ogden as a cemetery Dear John, Thank you for your observation about the inappropriate placing of flowers on the benches at Ogden. The staff here wholeheartedly agree with your comments. Obviously the benches are bought by the public, and at the point of purchase it is explained that bunches of flowers should not be placed on the estate, but rather down the cemetary or crematorium. We even have notices up explaining this. Unfortunately, but perhaps not unexpectedly, flowers still appear on anniversary dates etc. However, we will remove the flowers when we come across them (with the necessary degree of sensitivity). In lieu of bunches of flowers, we did suggest that the discrete planting of a few snowdrops would be okay, but appear to have been caught out on this one with the interpretation of 'discrete'. Again, this will be dealt with accordingly. Regards, Robin Dalton Ranger Ogden Water |

Comment by John Smith. Submitted at 20:08 on Monday 31-Mar-2008. Comment by Anthony G. Submitted at 09:43 on Wednesday 26-Mar-2008. SUBJECT: Jogging Not very far really. About a mile. But you can always do multiple laps or go around the woodland trail which is hillier. On the woodland trail, you will not knock too many pedestrians over! |

Comment by David Wilson . Trees and woodlands are very important, they clean the air, slow down the wind
providing shelter and in these environmentally conscious days, soak up carbon. |

Comment by Robin, Ranger, Ogden. Submitted at 22:11 on Friday 7-Dec-2007. SUBJECT: Work Experience Dear Martin, Probably the easiest way to answer any questions you may have is to give myself or Dave Wilson a ring at Ogden Water on (01422) 249136. We do take on students during school term time for work experience, although this is done centrally. Whether we do does depend on a number of factors (such as staffing levels, time of year, availability of suitable works etc) and also the age of your son - I believe their are insurance issues which need to be taken into consideration. We also have a regular core of fanatastic volunteers who come up at weekends to run Ogden. As to the actual work, there are many projects in the pipeline at the moment, from step building to tree planting, as well as the more 'mundane' every day management issues (litter clearance etc). I suggest you call and hope we can help you further. Kind Regards, Robin |

Comment by Robin, Ogden Ranger. Submitted at 16:24 on Wednesday 13-Jun-2007. SUBJECT: Feedback for Eve Thankyou for your positive comments about Ogden and your feedback. Its great to hear you had a good time and will be coming back. As Anthony has mentioned, a walking leaflet for the trails inside the Ogden Reserve is currently being produced. The existing site leaflet does have a basic map of the trails, and is available from the visitor centre. Longer walks from Ogden will have to planned by using an ordnance survey map. However, staff at Ogden are more than happy to give advice if required. Either way, I'll have a chat with Anthony about how we can develop the web site with further information. To help visitors, there will be an interpretitive panel going up in the near future with informtaion about the woodlands and wildlife at Ogden. Thanks for your feedback. Comment by Eve Learmont - Thom. Submitted at 16:56 on Sunday 3-Jun-2007. SUBJECT: Map Visited Ogden for the first time on Saturdat 2nd June, beautiful area. Saw for the first time a spotted flycatcher and realised there must be some lovley walks to do. But no map on the webpages not even the orienteering page? It would be very useful for new visitors to have a map to use when exploring. Yorkshire waters web pages were down and unable to help, the interactive one is ok but no details for walking and could do with a few more details itself. I.e. wildfowl on the water, doh, what species? Other than those little constuctive criticisms, great place and will certainly return, binoculars, picnic etc and walk more. E.L.T. |

Comment by Hiker. Submitted at 09:31 on Monday 30-Apr-2007. SUBJECT: Sculptures I walked over Nab Hill the other day from Warley Moor reservoir to Thornton Moor reservoir. I was amazed by the ad hoc walling enterprises that seem to be present at the side of the path. There is no mention of these sculptures on the OS maps. Many can be seen on Google Earth, particularly the question mark. There is a link to this on the Ogden Water website. The first sculpture seems to suggest a wind turbine, lying down. Next there is a question mark/shelter, and nearby can be seen the number 42! I wonder if Douglas Adams was walking here when he got the idea for the Answer to The Ultimate Question Of Life, the Universe and Everything? Also there are a high shelter type curved wall thingy, a high square table, that I understand used to have a stone slatey snake tail, and a round wall structure, in progress? Whats going on? |

Comment by Robin D. Submitted at 12:19 on Thursday 29-Mar-2007. SUBJECT: Muscovy Duck Hi Natalie There is only one Muscovy duck at Ogden Water, and he/she is regularly seen sitting at the duck feeding area waiting for food. It has been at Ogden for around 3 years, and was one of three Muscovy's released onto the reservoir. The other two, unfortunately didn't hang around/survive for long. Muscovy ducks are not native to the UK, but can be seen on lakes, reservoirs and ponds throughout the country. The Muscovy duck at Ogden has been given various names by visitors, some call her Nellie, others think he is male and call him Rasputin. I call him Gerald! |

Comment by David Wilson. Submitted at 19:45 on Thursday 26-Oct-2006. SUBJECT: Sculptures Unfortunately the the weather at Ogden doesn't allow untreated softwoods to last very long. The Sculptures were allowed to dry out as they were greenwood. Sadly they did become blackened by a fungal growth and did require a stain. At the recommendation of the men who did the work we applied a wax based preservative stain. Though a little bright at the moment, the colour will tone down given time. The life of such sculptures is alas short in such a wet environment, the treatment will at least allow the sculptures to be enjoyed for a least a little longer. |

Comment by suprised from Halifax. Submitted at 20:22 on Wednesday 25-Oct-2006. SUBJECT: 'sculptures' I had a great day when you had chainsaw artists visit Ogden and give a display, so what happened to all the stunning sculptures being created on the day? I have been a regular visitor since then and eagerly waited to see the pieces displayed in the woodland. So you can imagine my suprise to see on my recent visit the beautiful sculptures totally ruined by ridiculous coloured stain. This makes them look plastic and cheap, not anything like the wood I saw crafted all those months ago. Why choose such vivid colours for something that surely should have been much more subtle, perhaps NATURAL WOOD preservative would have been more in keeping? Even if time does fade the bright colours they are for the forseeable future a dissapointment, especially the eagle which WAS stunning. |

Comment by Anthony G. Submitted at 22:27 on Tuesday 20-Jun-2006. SUBJECT: Ogden Toilets....... I had a further discussion with Ranger David Wilson about the Toilets not being open as expected. He pointed out that anyone bringing a party of people to visit could contact the Ranger service a day or two before to inform them. The Rangers could then try to ensure facilities are available. Comment by Robin Dalton. Submitted at 23:35 on Wednesday 7-Jun-2006. SUBJECT: Ogden Toilets. In response to the toilets not being open by 10am on Sunday 14th May, I am sorry that they weren't available at this time and for the inconvenience caused. Generally, the Ogden toilets are open by 8:30am. However, there are only two full-time staff here, and on the weekends outside the summer we are fortunate that volunteer rangers take on staffing responsibilities. They are usually on site by 10:00am and open the toilets on arrival. Whilst it would not be reasonable to ask the volunteers to come in earlier (even though they often do), I shall discuss the issue with the Ogden Water manager and see if we can work out a resolution. Comment by Rosemary Boyle. Submitted at 08:17 on Monday 15-May-2006. SUBJECT: feedback Yesterday, 14th May a group of walkers from Rotherham Ramblers visted the area and parked at Ogden Water. We were disappointed to find the toilets locked at 10.00am and after over 1.5 hours travelling found this unacceptable when the notice indicated they were only locked from 5.00pm to 8.30am. Please respond |

Im sure a "then and now" one would prove very popular, especially to past and present visitors wherever they are in the world. |
